OPENING WEEKEND! Springtime at Fort Edward Augustus Encampment

May 6 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm

“This Fort is situated on the southern extremity of a Bay in Lake Michigan, termed by the French the Bay of Puants but which, since the English have gained possession of all the settlements on this part of the Continent, is called by them the Green Bay.  The reason of its being thus denominated is from its appearance, for on leaving Michilimackinac in the spring season, though the trees there have not even put forth their buds, yet you find the country around La Bay, notwithstanding the passage has not exceeded fourteen days, covered with the finest verdure and vegetation as forward as it could be were it summer.” – Jonathan Carver

Spring has finally arrived at Green Bay, gone is the snow-covered landscape, and the British soldiers and civilians of Fort Edward Augustus readily welcome the warm air and sunshine.

Reintroduce yourself to Heritage Hill for our season opening weekend! Historic interpreters will be in the majority of buildings with hands-on-history activities.  See the Fort Howard Guard Fife & Drum practice on Saturday and visit the Fur Trade area with an encampment by the Redcoats in Green Bay and the Yankee Peas Mess! Bring a picnic and make a day of it! Trams will also be running for better accessibility to the park.

For the encampment: visit the Fur Trade area soldiers can be seen practicing military drill, parapet firing, street firing, and marksmanship. The fort’s garden fence will be receiving repairs and the earth will be prepared for planting. See foods cooked over the fire and bread baked in a clay oven. And look for the garrison tailor who might be seen finishing alterations on some of the men’s new coats.
