Do I have to perform in public. No, belly dance can be a very special private thing a person can do only for themselves. Many Student dancers enjoy the health benefits of belly dance and creating friendships in the classroom and that meets their goals or needs.
Do I have to show my belly? No, Students are not required to expose their body. Did you know in the 1950’s belly dance was illegal in Egypt? Shortly after the law was overturned it remained illegal for the dancer to show the belly and was required to wear a dress style costume. Today the Egyption government still regulates belly dance and performers must have a license to dance. We are blessed as Americans to have the freedom to choose how we dress and what we dance.
Do Men belly dance? Yes, the roots of belly dance are very cultural. In its original form as a folkloric style it is common and often expected for Men to dance. Today belly dance has its place on stages and Men bring a special strength and magnificent energy to the dance and it is enjoyed by many.
